“Blindspot” star Michelle Hurd has been cast in the upcoming Season 2 of “Lethal Weapon.”

According to Deadline, Hurd will play the recurring role of police chief Gina Santos in the sophomore run of the FOX buddy cop series. Santos is Captain Brooks Avery’s (Kevin Rahm) new boss, who has an interesting past with police detective Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans). Martin Riggs’ (Clayne Crawford) partner, who is happily married to Trish (Keesha Murtaugh), is going to be somewhat paralyzed by Santos’ arrival, and the sexual tension between Murtaugh and the new character — which may be just in his head — will affect his performance at his job.

Hurd, who was a series regular in Season 2 of “Blindspot,” will continue to play Shepherd in Season 3 of the NBC drama. But TVLine reported that the actress will only appear in a recurring capacity next season.

Plot details about “Lethal Weapon’ Season 2 are being kept under wraps, but series creator Matt Miller said last March that the upcoming season 2 premiere will somehow reboot the series.

“The idea is to reboot the series in Season 2 by giving some resolution to what went down in Mexico in a way that feels satisfying, without necessarily having to do a serialized couple of episodes,” Miller told Yahoo TV. “We have a new mythology that we’re going to be introducing; the cartel will still be alive in Season 2, but they’re not going to be a focal point. We’re using them as a layer and building on top of it.”

At the end of Season 1 finale, Riggs headed to Mexico to hunt down Tito Flores (Danny Mora), the head of the cartel responsible for the death of his wife Miranda (Floriana Lima). After Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) found out that his partner went to Mexico all by himself, he decided to follow him to make sure that he comes back to Los Angeles in one piece. Although Murtaugh followed Riggs to Mexico out of concern for the latter’s safety, Miller said that the two will continue to clash with one another once they meet there.

“There’s always going to be a rift between the guys and things are going to happen in Mexico that will be very difficult for them to talk about,” Miller teased about what’s to come in Season 2.

“Lethal Weapon” Season 2, episode 1 will air on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. EST in FOX.
