  • Liam Neeson's action thriller "Honest Thief" made $3.7 million in its U.S. box office debut

  • Neeson was excited that his movie was released in theaters despite the pandemic

Liam Neeson's "Honest Thief" topped the domestic box office after raking in $3.7 million in its debut. This put the action thriller slightly ahead of Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" and Robert De Niro's "War With Grandpa."

"Honest Thief" has earned a total of $4.2 million when factoring in Canadian theaters, Variety reported.

"Tenet" made $1.6 million, which puts the sci-fi epic's North American total at $50.6 million as of its seventh week of release. The movie continues to perform well overseas, generating $5 million at the international box office to bring its worldwide total to $333.9 million.

“Moviegoers, particularly couples, came back to theatres to enjoy ‘Honest Thief’ in a theatrical environment and were rewarded with a movie rated 88% on the audience score from Rotten Tomatoes,” Tom Ortenberg, who recently relaunched Open Road with Josh Green’s Raven Capital, said in a statement to Variety.

De Niro's family comedy "War With Grandpa," meanwhile, made $2.5 million from 2,260 locations in its sophomore run. It made a total of $7.2 million domestically.

“Well-know stars like Neeson and De Niro, and Halloween-themed classics, are drawing audiences to theaters in solid numbers considering that only 49% of theaters in North America are open and [they are] operating at limited capacity in each auditorium,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore.

In "Honest Thief," Neeson plays the role of a meticulous thief Tom Carter, who is called the In and Out Bandit for stealing $9 million from small-town banks while keeping his identity a secret. However, he falls in love with bubbly Annie (Kate Walsh) and decides to make a fresh start by coming clean about his criminal past, but two ruthless FBI agents double-cross him.

"Honest Thief" is directed by Mark Williams. It also stars Anthony Ramos, Jai Courtney, Jeffrey Donovan, Robert Patrick and Jasmine Cephas Jones. The movie, which is set in Boston, was filmed in Worcester, Massachusetts, in late 2018.

In a recent interview with Boston.com, Neeson expressed excitement over his latest movie and opened up about his life changed after the pandemic.

"I finished up a film in Winnipeg on March 19. I got to Upstate New York, my home, March 20. I think I’ve left my house maybe five times in the last six months. It’s kind of strange," he recalled.

"Look, there are millions of people who don’t have a job or know where their next meal is coming from. I have a house that’s paid for. I have a few acres to walk around on. I’m so f------ lucky. And I count my blessings every day," he continued. "Right now, I’m excited for the film. It’s going to be back in theaters, live theaters, which is going to be great."
