Lil Nas X’s life before fame wasn’t very glamorous.

As People reports, the music sensation revealed that before his hit song “Old Town Road” he didn’t even have his own bed. In early 2019, the Georgia native was sleeping on a relative’s couch.

“My only vision was to make it out of where I was as quick as possible,” the 20-year-old told the outlet. “I didn’t know what that would look like.”

Since the release of “Old Town Road,” the country star has worked with Billy Ray Cyrus, won two Grammys, and landed a spot in a Doritos Super Bowl commercial.

“It feels amazing,” he said of his newfound success.

While Lil Nas X has continued to find success after “Old Town Road” (and its remix) by releasing the hip-hop single “Panini,” he has faced some criticism after coming out as gay on Twitter. The star told People he feared his love life would distract people from his music.

“There’s always that fear that something will overshadow your career,” said Lil Nas X, who is currently working on his new album. “But it’s all depending on what you decide to do. So you just work harder to make sure that it doesn’t and just keep going I guess.”

While dealing with it all, the artist has remained calm and his usual witty self on Twitter. After a rapper by the name of Pastor Troy went on what was labeled by some as a “homophobic rant” about Lil Nas X winning big at the Grammys last month, Lil Nas X drew the attention back to his award show attire.

In spite of some criticism, the rapper has also received a lot of support. While introducing him ahead of his Grammy performance, TV host Ellen Degeneres referred to him as an “inspiration,” a moment the performer described as “pretty incredible.”

When it comes down to it, Lil Nas X is living proof that there’s light at the end of every tunnel.
