KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool were close to signing Fabio Carvalho on Jan. 31
  • The Reds failed to complete the paperwork in time
  • Carvalho will continue at Fulham for the rest of the season

Liverpool FC are reportedly confident of signing Fulham midfielder Fabio Carvalho in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp's side failed to secure Carvalho on the deadline day of the January transfer window. The Reds wanted to sign him in a long-term deal but would have loaned him back to Fulham for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.

Liverpool are still looking to sign a pre-contract agreement with Carvalho, which would see the 19-year-old move to Anfield as a free agent in the 2022 summer market, reported Sky Sports.

If Liverpool are unable to sign Carvalho on a free transfer in the summer, it would ask Fulham to accept the same fee that was agreed during the winter market. It was earlier reported that Liverpool had submitted a $7 million bid for Carvalho, who was also a target of FC Barcelona.

Carvalho had agreed to personal terms with Liverpool and also passed a medical Monday, according to Fabrizio Romano, who has a credible record in European transfer markets. The Reds were unable to complete the necessary paperwork and submit it in time on the deadline day.

Meanwhile, Fulham managed to sign Liverpool right-back Neco Williams on loan for the rest of the season, according to The Athletic.

The 20-year-old Williams, who won the Premier League and FIFA Club World Cup with Liverpool, has made 22 appearances for the first team, having joined the club’s youth set up at the Under-9 level.

Marco Silva-managed Fulham are currently five points clear at the top of the 2021-22 Championship table, the second-tier league in English soccer. Fulham still have a game in hand.

On the penultimate day of the January window, Liverpool announced the signing of Porto FC winger Luis Diaz. The Reds defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the talented Colombian player.
