A twist has emerged in the Jadon Sancho and Manchester United transfer talks after pundits recently claimed that sources close to the Borussia Dortmund star, including a family member, said Liverpool was initially his first choice.

It has been a long transfer courtship between the Red Devils and Sancho. United remains the frontrunner to sign the 20-year-old winger, with recent reports speculating the Premier League giants are closing in on an agreement that could potentially reach more than £100 million ($130.7 million).

However, an intriguing story about Sancho’s initial preference was recently revealed by Liverpool star-turned-pundit Danny Murphy and Talksport reporter Alex Crook. In a recent chat on Talksport radio, Murphy said he was once told that Sancho’s first choice was Liverpool.

“I did hear that his preference would be Liverpool ahead of [Manchester] United,” he said.

This was apparently not news to Crook, who claimed to have heard the same thing from a family member of the Borussia Dortmund star.

“I heard the same and that has actually come from a family member of Jadon Sancho’s that lives over here in England. (But) that was before the pandemic and before Jurgen Klopp could justify spending big money on Timo Werner,” Crook responded.

Indeed, Liverpool was once interested in signing Sancho. Back in June, Klopp said, "A red jersey would look very good on Jadon Sancho. But I don't think such a transfer will take place this summer. He is a very interesting player. If he moved to Liverpool, I would be the most surprised of all."

But despite the interest, the Reds never managed to progress the way United did in pursuing Sancho.

Meanwhile, United and Sancho have now taken another step closer to reaching an agreement, The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano reported Monday.

“Manchester United negotiations with BVB for #Sancho are now in ‘advanced stage’. Man Utd always wanted to pay him using ‘add ons’ and ‘installments’ after virus. Still no agreement but talks on. Personal terms are not a problem - his contract would be until June 2025,” he wrote on Twitter.

After an impressive goal scoring run with Dortmund, Sancho became one of the hottest prospects in Europe this summer. In fact, his move is arguably the biggest story of this year’s transfer window.
