KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool is being linked to a move for Lille striker Jonathan David
  • David’s unique quality earned him comparisons to Sadio Mane
  • The Reds are expected to pursue a striker in January when Mohamed Salah and Mane leaves for the African Cup of Nations

Liverpool could already be tracking a versatile striker ahead of a potential problem in the frontline.

Lille rising star Jonathan David burst onto the scene in Ligue 1 last season after becoming a key figure in the squad’s dethroning of Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward’s remarkable maiden season with the French champions did not go unnoticed as scouting expert Josh Williams revealed that he has been “noting” Liverpool often pursue potential signings such as David.

According to Williams, the Reds seem to have been leaning towards landing “two-footed” strikers and David certainly is one.

"He [David] looks like he would have that to his game," Williams said on ”Analysing Anfield” podcast. “He looks like the type of player who could play out wide and he’s quick enough to dart in behind. It’s short, sharp bursts when he’s on the ball and when he’s off the ball as well.”

"Another thing I’ve been noting a lot recently is the two-footed nature of players Liverpool tend to be linked within the attack,” he continued. "You’ve got Sadio Mane who we know is extremely two-footed. He prefers his right about 75% of the time – obviously, a 50/50 would be 50%.But 75% of the time, that’s quite two-footed. If you look at Diogo Jota, he’s about 67% two-footed, which is even more than Mane is."

Further assessing the compatibility of David with Liverpool, Williams even reckoned that the 21-year-old’s efficiency in using his “right foot” resembles that of Sadio Mane’s.

"If you look at Jonathan David, he prefers his right foot 76% of the time, which is very similar to [Sadio] Mane,” the scout explained. "If you’re playing on either flank, then it really does help if you’re equally capable with your left as you are with your right and vice-versa."

"Liverpool looks for a versatile striker, who can play on both flanks maybe, offering a threat from out wide as well as through the middle," he added. "[David] He does seem to be a versatile option. Since he moved to Lille, he’s played up front virtually every week.”

Liverpool could be seeing David as an immediate solution to a temporary yet big problem in its attack.

Weighing in on the subject, English Premier League legend and pundit Paul Robinson emphasized that Jurgen Klopp should really be concerned about the “gap” Mane and Mohamed Salah may leave because of the African Cup of Nations.

Robinson stressed that with Salah and Mane being at risk of incurring injuries in the said tournament, Liverpool could already be thinking about signing a forward in January as early as “now.”

“[Mohamed] Salah and Mane are going to leave a big gap when they leave,” Robinson exclusively told Football Insider.

“They [Liverpool] will have the chance to address that area in the January window though. Perhaps, it is something they are looking into now.”
