With Maine's Senate race still in the balance, Democrat Sara Gideon’s campaign has told reporters she will not be making a speech as she remains in a close race with Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

"It’s clear the race will not be called tonight," Gideon's campaign said in a statement early Wednesday.

As of 1:32 a.m. ET on Wednesday, there were 55% votes reported. Collins leads at 52.4%-41.2%.

The race was considered a potential flip for Democrats. Collins' controversial choice to vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 to the Supreme Court drew anger from the state's liberals, while millions in out-of-state donations flowed to Gideon.

Collins has served as Maine's senator since 1997. A moderate Republican, she holds pro-choice views and has backed some stricter environmental regulations.

Gideon has served as Maine's house speaker since December 2016. She has centered her campaign around protecting health care and has criticized Collins for not doing enough to stand up to President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Democrat Joe Biden leads the Republican incumbent in Maine, which means Collins is outperforming Trump.
