MALEFICENT
"Maleficent" will hit theaters in June 2014. Disney

The official trailer for Disney’s highly anticipated live-action film, “Maleficent,” has been released! Disney posted the trailer video online on Wednesday, Nov. 13 and it’s just as magical – yet frightening – as fans had hoped.

“I know who you are,” Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) says as a shadowed Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) stalks through the forest. “You’ve been watching over me my whole life. I know you’re there. Your shadow has been following me ever since I was small.”

“Don’t be afraid,” she begs. But a hidden Maleficent tells the young princess that she’s not afraid.

“Then come out,” Aurora counters.

“Then you’ll be afraid,” Maleficent replies, as Aurora slowly backs up.

Besides getting a better look at Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora and Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, viewers will want to keep their eyes peeled for another famous face – Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s youngest daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. The five-year-old, who plays a toddler Princess Aurora, can be seen happily running through a field in the “Maleficent” trailer.

The video also shows key scenes that fans of “Sleeping Beauty” will remember – Princess Aurora getting pricked by the spindle and falling into a deep slumber, and maleficent raising a deadly fortress of thorns. However “Maleficent” is far from the 1959 Disney classic, “Sleeping Beauty.”

“Maleficent” takes a twist on the story, telling it from the side of the iconic black horned witch. Before becoming evil, Maleficent was a “beautiful, pure-hearted young woman,” who had an “idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom.” But one day Maleficent’s tranquil home was turned upside by an army that “threatened the harmony of the land.”

According to the plot synopsis: “Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora hold the key to peace in the kingdom – and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”

“Maleficent” will be hitting theaters in June 2014 instead of its initial May 30 release date.
