New Year celebrations turned tragic for a man after he lost his life when fireworks ended up exploding in his face in Pattaya, Thailand.

According to local reports, the man, identified as 50-year-old British tourist Gary McLaren, was celebrating with his Thai girlfriend when the unfortunate incident took place. He attempted to ignite a cardboard tube full of fireworks. However, when the fireworks did not ignite on the first attempt, he tried to light them again. Suddenly, the fireworks began releasing smoke before exploding in his face. He immediately fell to the ground and was lying in a pool of blood.

Passersby immediately called the emergency services who arrived at the location and declared him dead after performing chest compressions at the scene. His body was transferred to a nearby hospital for autopsy and police have informed the British Embassy in Bangkok about the man’s death.

Meanwhile, photos and videos from the location showed the victim’s girlfriend tearfully hugging his body. Following the death, the girlfriend took to Facebook to share a photo of the two and captioned it “This is our last picture honey, you will be in my heart for ever babe. RIP Gary McLaren.”
