A man from Indiana fell off a cliff and lost his life while on a recreational day trip in Puerto Rico.

Edgar Garay, 27, was last seen alive on the 70-foot coastal cliff near the lighthouse in Cabo Rojo, the Coast Guard said.

A witness said she saw Edgar "stumble towards the edge" while he was standing on the cliff at around 5:37 p.m. local time Sunday.

Edgar's brother, Carlos Garay, said the deceased man was shooting videos for social media when he fell to his death, according to People.

"My brother has a TikTok account that he loved to upload videos to," Carlos told WTHR. "Unfortunately, that was what he was trying to do when he was closer to the edge than he should have been."

Carlos said Edgar was with a cousin who took him sightseeing on the day of the incident. While they were at the top, the cousin repeatedly told Edgar not to get too close to the cliff's edge, the brother told the outlet.

The cousin walked away from the edge at some point and then looked back to find that Edgar had fallen.

Coast Guard watch-standers were informed about the man's fall at 6:50 p.m. Sunday. Rescue teams began looking for Edgar, and helicopters searched into the night before his submerged body was found Monday afternoon.

The body recovered from an underwater cave in the cliff had massive head injuries, Carlos said.

"We express our most heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Edgar Garay and pray they find closure and strength during this most difficult time," said Capt. José E. Díaz, Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander. "We appreciate the efforts of all the Coast Guard, Puerto Rico Police and partner agency emergency responders, especially the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau dive unit that was able to locate Mr. Garay's body in such a highly inaccessible and challenging environment."

Edgar, born in Puerto Rico, moved to Columbus, Indiana, with his parents at the age of five.

"Our friends would refer to him, because of his fluffy cheeks, as being 'Chuwey.' It just kind of stuck," said the bereaved brother, who described Edgar as daring and full of life.
