A 40-year-old man from Mumbai, India, killed his friend, chopped up the body into over 200 pieces and flushed them down a toilet to cover up the murder. The gruesome incident was the result of an unpaid loan.

According to Mumbai police, the crime took place Jan. 16, when the accused, Pintu Sharma, got into a verbal altercation with the victim Ganesh Kolhatkar, a man in his mid-50s, over money the latter had borrowed from the former but failed to repay. Kolhatkar had borrowed 100,000 rupees (about $1,400) for his business, and but had returned only 40,000 rupees.

“After killing Kolhatkar, to eliminate the evidence, Pintu chopped the body into pieces and flushed them down the toilet over the course of four days. He then took the bones separately and threw it out of train," police added.

The incident came to light Tuesday, after the drainage system of the building got blocked, and cleaners were called to remove the blockage. The workers found human flesh in the sewage tank of the building, and informed the police. As part of their investigation, police checked all the locked apartments in the building and zeroed in on one from where a foul smell was coming, which turned out to belong to the accused.

Sharma was arrested and charged with murder and tampering with evidence of an offence.

Even before the incident came to light, Kolhatkar's family members had registered a missing persons complaint, but the police failed to locate him, local daily Deccan Chronicle reported.

In a similar incident that took place in New Delhi, a man strangled his wife and chopped her body into seven pieces, following a heated argument between the couple. The incident came to light when locals spotted a carton stuffed with human remains and informed police. It was found that the accused, Sajid Ali Ansari, strangled his wife and then had his two brothers help him in chopping up the body, local daily India Today reported.

In another similar incident, a couple — identified as Juan Carlos N. and Patricia N. — was arrested in Mexico, for killing several women and cutting up their body parts to feed pets. The couple was caught while carrying body parts in a “baby buggy.” Mexico police found some body parts stored in a refrigerator and some more in plastic buckets covered in cement. Juan told a court he killed 20 women and used their bones to make fertilizer and the flesh as pet food.
