Upset over his wife’s affair with her lover, a man killed his daughters and sent photos of their bodies to her before killing himself Tuesday in the west Indian state of Maharashtra.

According to a police complaint filed by the deceased’s brother, 40-year-old Rishikant C. Kudupalli was upset because his wife eloped with her lover last week, leaving him with their six-year-old and 18-month-old daughters. Kudupalli first filed a complaint with the police about his wife missing. He then managed to locate her in order to convince her to returned to him, a demand she turned down.

On Tuesday, Kudupalli, a college teacher, choked his daughters to death with a scarf and hanged them. He then clicked photos of their bodies hanging from the noose and sent them to his wife over WhatsApp, before going to another room and hanging himself there, local daily the Times Of India reported.

On seeing the photos, Kudupalli’s wife immediately informed her father, who in turn contacted the dead man’s brother. Kudupalli's brother reached the house and repeatedly knocked on the door. When no one answered, he broke it down with the help of neighbors and found the bodies hanging in two different rooms.

A case was registered against Kudupalli’s wife and her lover under several sections of the Indian Penal Code — including murder, abetment to suicide and torture.

“They are currently absconding and we have launched a search operation for them,” police official Sunil Kamble said, local television station NDTV reported.

In a similar incident in 2018 in the west Indian state of Gujarat, a man killed his sons and then attempted suicide after a fight with his wife. Bhaumik Pagi killed his sons, aged 4 and 7 years, by throwing them into a well after an argument with his wife, who suspected him of having an affair. He then attempted suicide by consuming pesticide but was saved and admitted to a hospital. The bodies of the children were fished out from the well the following day and the man was charged with murder, NDTV reported.
