A man abducted a sleeping four-year-old and raped her in the southern Indian state of Telangana on Tuesday.

The incident came to light Wednesday morning when the mother of the unnamed victim found her missing and began searching for her. The woman found her daughter in a nearby field. When confronted, the girl narrated the incident to her following which a police complaint was filed.

Police said the victim was sleeping beside her mother and grandmother at their home Tuesday night when the accused, a relative of the girl, entered the house and abducted her. The 36-year-old accused then took her to the village outskirts where he raped her.

“The girl was sleeping right next to the mother, but since both the mother and grandmother were in deep sleep, they did not realize that the girl was abducted,” a police officer said, adding that a medical examination was conducted on the girl and “doctors informed that the girl’s health condition was stabilized.”

Meanwhile, a case was registered under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. Police were investigating the incident and search was underway for the accused, who was on the run as of Thursday.

“We have formed eight teams and are conducting searches in all the villages. We will detain him soon,” police said.
