  • Manchester United is reportedly targetting Paris Saint-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino as next manager
  • Pochettino was approached by Manchester United back in November
  • Ralf Rangnick will need to balance his managerial and consultant tasks to bring Manchester United back to the top

Manchester United’s search for their next permanent manager has them eyeing Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino after reports surfaced that Red Devils players are in support of his move.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News first divulged this development, noting that the former Tottenham Hotspurs manager has always had his eye on becoming the next Manchester United manager.

“[Mauricio] Pochettino is believed to be the most popular pick among the players. The club is also understood to be confident of hiring Pochettino due to his long-standing interest in managing [Manchester] United,” Luckhurst wrote.

The club tried its luck in convincing Paris Saint-Germain to release Pochettino from his contract back in November, but the Qatari-owned club was not interested in letting him walk.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has been doing his best in trying to steer Manchester United in the right direction this season.

Since taking over after the firing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021, the 63-year-old German amassed six wins, five draws, and one loss which helped the Red Devils climb their way up the English Premier League table in the hopes of a top-four finish.

However, their march to possibly contending for the Premier League title took a major hit after a 1-1 draw to Burnley.

Paul Pogba’s goal at the 18th-minute broke open the scoring, but the Old Trafford side conceded a goal to Jay Rodriguez two minutes into the second half that forced them to settle for the eventual draw thanks to lackadaisical efforts on both ends of the pitch.

Balancing a manager search and playing high-level football is a difficult situation, but Rangnick knew what he signed up for when he agreed to take the position.

Luckhurst later added that Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is still on the list and is Pochettino’s fiercest rival for the position at Old Trafford.

Having either Pochettino or ten Hag call the shots from the sidelines for Manchester United will be a massive acquisition for them next season, but that is a concern for the upper management to deal with.

The Red Devils, one point behind fourth-place West Ham United, are next in action against Southampton on Friday, February 11 at Old Trafford.
