  • Mark Lawrenson suggests West Ham will make a move for Jesse Lingard
  • David Moyes insists they will sign Lingard when the opportunity arises
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms the midfielder is still part of his plans

West Ham United could be plotting a shock transfer swoop for a revitalized Manchester United midfielder.

Aside from being a Liverpool legend and BBC pundit, some may not know Mark Lawrenson is a close friend of West Ham United manager David Moyes.

With the Hammers undeniably keen on signing Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal, Lawrenson has revealed what Moyes has in mind about it.

According to Lawrenson, he is certain West Ham will pursue Lingard after Moyes bared that the midfielder has been enjoying “his life” with the Hammers.

“He’s not going to start at Manchester United, is he?” Lawrenson told “Off the Ball.” “I think it’s one of those if you ring up Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] today, it will be like ‘well, he played yesterday and he’s part of my plans’.

“I am sure [David] Moyes would take him [Lingard],” he continued. “Although, he did say that they got him at absolutely the right time. I said ‘what do you mean?’ He said ‘well, he enjoys his life’. I thought it was a great statement. He said ‘well, it was lockdown and COVID’ He basically came into training [with West Ham] then he went back to his apartment and that’s where he was.”

“I thought that was a modern insight into the way some of the footballers are. He would take him because he said ‘he was like a breath of fresh air.'”

Moyes has been outspoken about keeping Lingard and his stance has not changed one bit.

Speaking in a press conference last week, Moyes insisted that West Ham will definitely sign Lingard when the “opportunity” comes.

"Jesse is a Manchester United player," the manager said. "I mean the questions are not for me, the questions are for Manchester United. But you know we enjoyed having him.

"If the opportunity arose for us to get Jesse we would be interested, but in my mind, he's at Manchester United and it is not for us to discuss."

Lingard played regularly in pre-season for Manchester United. Though there is still no concrete statement about his future, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that the player is still part of his “plans.”

"There’s nothing better than seeing players willing to fight for their place,” Solskajer told the club's official website during pre-season. “Of course, what he did towards the end of the season, that is the true Jesse.”

"That’s what we know he is capable of,” he added. “I think we saw towards the end [of our own season] that we lacked maybe some options at times. He's still in my plans. I expect him at Man United at the start of the season."
