  • Manchester United is closing in on a deal to sign Edinson Cavani, a report said
  • Cavani's agent confirmed they have reached an agreement with United
  • The former PSG star is expected to travel to England for a medical on Sunday

Manchester United is set to sign Edinson Cavani on a two-year deal as the club makes a last-minute move before the transfer deadline on Monday.

ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that the Red Devils are in the final stages of discussions with Cavani. The former Paris Saint-Germain star could head to England on Sunday for a medical.

The renowned striker is also eager to move to Old Trafford. Cavani's deal could be for one year with the option of another 12 months, per ESPN. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

Transfer negotiations between both parties “accelerated quickly” on Saturday and the terms of the deal are set to be finalized Sunday, ESPN reported, citing unnamed insiders.

Cavani’s agent, Walter Guglielmone, confirmed to Inside Futbol that his client is indeed headed for United.

“It’s true,” Guglielmone said of Cavani’s transfer to United. “There is an agreement [with Manchester United].”

Transfer insider and The Guardian reporter Fabrizio Romano, who has a credible record for breaking transfer news in European soccer, earlier reported that Cavani was eyeing a “long-term” deal with the Red Devils. The sports journalist added that the transfer will be completed once United agrees to pay his agent’s fee amounting to €10 million ($12 million).

After officially becoming a free agent at the end of the last Ligue 1 season, the 33-year-old was immediately offered to various clubs across Europe’s top five leagues.

The first offer for Cavani came from Benfica, but the Primeira Liga side wasn’t able to match his price tag. La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid also monitored his situation but never managed to reach an agreement.

Newly-promoted Premier League club Leeds United earlier hinted at the possibility of signing Cavani with team owner Andrea Radrizzani looking to capitalize on his free transfer. However, a deal did not come to fruition as well.

“In addition to his quality, Cavani could contribute with his physicality and adapt here,” Radrizzani said in July. “But I’ve never talked about him with the coach [Marcelo Bielsa]. Having said that, we’ve certainly thought about him and we’ll see. Given he’s still available on a free transfer.”

Reigning Serie A champion Juventus was the only club that came close to agreeing terms, but a dispute over the length of Cavani's contract saw negotiations fall apart.

Cavani is considered one of the best goal scorers to ever grace the pitch. The Uruguayan striker scored a total of 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG following his move from Napoli in 2013.
