  • England's Greenwood and Foden broke quarantine rules in Iceland
  • The duo has been sent back home ahead of England's match with Denmark
  • Greenwood had a breakthrough season in 2019-20, where he netted 17 goals

Manchester United teenage sensation Mason Greenwood has been asked to leave the England national team after an "unacceptable" breach of coronavirus quarantine guidelines in Iceland.

England head coach Gareth Southgate has confirmed that along with Greenwood, 20-year-old Phil Foden also breached the coronavirus quarantine guidelines and the duo did not travel with the England squad for their next Nations League fixture, which is in Denmark on Tuesday.

Both the players, who made their international debut during England’s 1-0 victory over Iceland recently, broke the COVID-19 quarantine rules and they were the only players missing at England’s training session where Southgate took his final tactical session ahead of the Denmark match.

Greenwood had a breakthrough season in 2019-20, where he netted 17 goals in 53 competitive matches for Man Utd.

Notable sports website Sky Sports has reported that the Nations League match between England and Denmark will go ahead as scheduled after talks between UEFA and FA officials. The report has also revealed that the players have each been fined 250,000 Icelandic Krona ($1,787) for the rule breach, which needs to be paid by the players themselves and not by the FA or their clubs.

"Unfortunately, this morning it was brought to my attention that the two boys have broken the COVID-19 guidelines in terms of our secure bubble. We had to decide very quickly that they could not have any interaction with the team, wouldn't be able to train. Given the procedures we have to follow now, they have to travel back to England separately,” Southgate said in a press conference, as reported by Sky Sports.

The England manager has also assured that the quarantine breach had happened away from the team hotel, where the FA booked the squad.

"Nothing has happened in the areas we occupy in the team hotel. We are still getting to the depths of all the information because it was only brought to my attention only a couple of hours before training, I am still getting to grips with some of the detail," added Southgate.
