Selection Sunday is five days away, but a handful of teams have already punched their ticket to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Five of the spots in this year’s March Madness bracket have been filled by conference champions.

Of the 68 teams that will be in the NCAA Tournament, 32 will earn their way into the field with automatic bids. Longwood, Loyola Chicago, Murray State, Chattanooga and Georgia State have won the first five conference tournaments.

Chattanooga clinched a spot in the 2022 March Madness bracket in dramatic fashion. David Jean-Baptiste’s three-pointer at the buzzer gave Chattanooga a 64-63 overtime victory over Furman in the Southern Conference Championship Game.

Chattanooga was the conference’s best team in the regular season. The Mocs finished first with a 14-4 conference record and a 27-7 overall record.

Loyola Chicago is no stranger to March Madness. The Ramblers reached the Final Four in 2018 and made a Sweet Sixteen appearance last season. Loyola briefly cracked the AP Top 25 Poll as the nation’s No. 22 team in mid-January.

Murray State is the only currently ranked team that has clinched an automatic bid. The No. 19 team in the latest poll, the Racers won the Ohio Valley with a perfect 18-0 conference record. Murray State enters March Madness on a 20-game winning streak. One of their only two losses this season came against Auburn, which was ranked No. 1 at the time.

Georgia State didn’t have an easy road to the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers finished third in the Sun Belt standings and have 10 losses on the season. Georgia State had a losing record in early February before going on a 10-game winning streak.

Longwood clinched its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid by defeating Winthrop in the Big South Championship Game.
