A shooting took place at Maryland Heights Community Center in Missouri on Monday night. Police said the suspected gunman and one visitor were dead following the incident.

Emergency crews were called to the community center located at 2300 McKelvey Road at around 9:15 p.m. EST. Maryland Police Department asked people to avoid the area near the site and Ameling Road.

“We are currently working on an active scene. We will update as soon as possible,” police said on Twitter, assuring people that there is no danger.

Police asked people to come down to the facility in case they were looking for family or friends. Concerned parents and other family members showed up outside to pick up their loved ones.

Police said the community center will remain closed for an indefinite period. They are yet to reveal further details about the incident.

A witness told KMOV that she was inside the facility when she heard the gunshots. She said people ran for cover inside a fitness center. "We heard about five to six shots go off and we all started running toward the closest fitness room and dispersed throughout the closets," she said.

Doug, a local resident who revealed only his first name, said people came to his home asking for shelter.

"They were screaming saying please let me in. People just started walking through the front door. People with towels on their heads that came out of the pool. Some people had workout gear on. There were all kinds of people, adults and children," he said. "I felt like I was protecting them."
