Warner Bros. is looking into the possibility of resuming productions for “The Matrix 4” as soon as possible. The studio is eyeing the first week of July as the earliest date they can resume productions, after being halted due to COVID-19 concerns. The studio has also given the cast eight-week contract extensions, along with plans when they resume filming.

The movie will once again be directed by at least one of the Wachowskis, Lana Wachowski, Game Rant reported. The film's fourth installation is scheduled to be released by 2021 — An exact release date has not been marked for the film. No reports have also been released on how the ongoing coronavirus-induced lockdowns will affect the post-production and launching of the film.

Returning to their old roles in the film are Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson and Jada Pinkett Smith. There are also newcomers including Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris.

Since February, way before the lockdowns started, pieces of news about the movie came out. According to Datebook, returning character Neo and his ally-love interest, Trinity, will mysteriously return from the dead. Neo, at least, will have some changes done to him after becoming assimilated by the head of the Machines.

During that month, the film — which follows the human rebellion against their machine overmasters, which imprisoned them in the original ‘Matrix’ —was reportedly shooting scenes in the Bay Area. The production would have gone on from early March, before they packed up and moved into other locations.

The Bay Area has some history with earlier films in the series. Although most of it was shot in Australia, the area in San Francisco has had chase scenes, particularly one in which Moss appeared in. This was the car chase scene between Trinity and cops (and agents), which was filmed in Oakland for “The Matrix Reloaded.”

“The Matrix 4” will be released in 2021 by Village Roadshow and Silver Pictures and will be distributed by Warner Bros.
