Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp. voluntarily recalled all items produced from its facility in Keaau, Hawaii, over a potential E. coli contamination, state health officials announced Monday. The recall of products was dated between Sept. 6 and Sept. 21.

Department of Health officials said that these products may have come in contact with water from a well — that supplies the Keaau facility at 16-701 Macadamia Road — believed to be contaminated. Authorities warned these products must not be consumed. To date, no illnesses related to the water have been reported to the state.

All retailers were asked to remove Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut products received after Sept. 6. Consumers who purchased the recalled products were also asked to either discard them or return them to the store where purchased.

“There is clear evidence that food produced at the Keaau facility may be contaminated and consumers may be at risk,” said state sanitation branch chief Peter Oshiro in a news release. “The Department of Health is working with the facility to ensure the safety of their drinking water and food production.”

The Department of Health said officials are working with the facility to ensure the drinking water is safe and the facility is cleared before operations are allowed to resume.

"We are still doing additional samples to get a better idea of what could possibly happened. We believe it might be part of their disinfect system needing to be improved, as well as potential contamination from hurricane brown water," Safe Drinking Water Branch Chief Joanna Seto said.

E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a bacteria that normally occur in the environment as well as in the guts of animals and humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Some of its types are pathogenic that can cause illness through exposure to contaminated food or water, or contact with animals or other people.

E. coli bacteria symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches. It poses a health risk especially for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems, health officials said.
