Meghan Markle recently paid tribute to Princess Diana during her trip to Birkenhead.

On Monday, the Duchess of Sussex was photographed in her purple Babaton by Aritizia dress under a red wrap coat by Sentaler. She accentuated her growing baby bump with a belt.

Markle’s chosen color combination for her attire came as a surprise because Prince Harry’s wife is known for sticking to block colors. The “Suits” alum typically wears dark-colored clothes in public, though she sometimes opts for lighter shades. But a red and purple combination was a first for Markle.

According to People, even though the combination was surprising, it’s not something that has never been done before. In 1989, Princess Diana wore the exact same combination when she went to Hong Kong. At that time, the Princess of Wales paired her purple skirt with her red cardigan. She also wore a matching hat for the occasion.

Princess Diana once again wore the same colors when she went to Bangkok, Thailand in 1988 And in 1992, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom was photographed in her red cardigan and purple skirt when she went to India. The mom of two posed in front of the Taj Mahal at that time.

Markle’s recent color choices may have something to do with how she was feeling on Monday and her first pregnancy. During a 2015 interview with InStyle, Markle said that her “Suits” character, Rachel Zane, changed the color of her wardrobe based on her moods.

“You’ll notice that in season 2 when she’s falling in love with Mike, I wear more blush tones. And the season 1 when she’s really all about business, I wear more charcoal grays and blacks,” she said. “I think our clothes are such a reflection of how we’re feeling,” she added.

However, it is also possible that Markle didn’t pick the clothes herself. The Duchess of Sussex has an entire team that helps her with her wardrobe on a daily basis especially when she has a public engagement.
