The widespread attention Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Netflix documentary has received prompted the couple to clarify their exit from the British royal family.

The release of the "Harry & Meghan" docuseries has caused some to question why the couple would open up about their personal lives when the narrative around their royal exit suggests that they wanted privacy.

However, the couple's global press secretary, Ashley Hansen, denied Meghan and Prince Harry left the royal family to live a more private life.

"Their statement announcing their decision to step back mentions nothing of privacy and reiterates their desire to continue their roles and public duties," Hansen said in a statement to The New York Times.

"Any suggestion otherwise speaks to a key point of this series. They are choosing to share their story on their terms, and yet the tabloid media has created an entirely untrue narrative that permeates press coverage and public opinion. The facts are right in front of them."

When Meghan and Harry announced their plans to step back from their royal duties in January 2020, the couple planned to split their time between the U.K. and North America, which would give them "space to focus on the next chapter."

"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," the initial statement read.

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

However, by February 2021, Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess' exit would be permanent.

"Harry & Meghan" follows the couple's love story and their eventual exit from the royal family. Netflix is expected to release the final three episodes of the six-part docuseries on Dec. 15.
