The New York Mets appear to be out of the running to acquire J.T. Realmuto after signing Wilson Ramos to be their starting catcher. New York was considered to be a top candidate to complete a trade with the Marlins, and the team reportedly had an opportunity to do so.

According to SNY.tv’s Andy Martino, the Mets declined a straight up swap of Noah Syndergaard for Realmuto. New York and Miami discussed several trade options, but the two teams were unable to come to an agreement.

Syndergaard found himself at the center of several trade rumors during last week’s Winter Meetings, so much so that he even acknowledged the reports on social media. The pitcher was involved in a proposed three-way deal with the New York Yankees that reportedly would have sent Syndergaard to the Bronx and Miguel Andujar, among others, to Miami.

The Mets also discussed three-way possibilities with the Marlins and San Diego Padres that included Syndergaard and Realmuto. The Padres have reportedly been interested in acquiring the right-hander since the trade deadline.

New York ultimately found the asking price for Realmuto to be too high. The Mets refused to deal Amed Rosario, Michael Conforto and Brandom Nimmo in trade talks with the Marlins.

Miami has been unable to trade Realmuto because they are asking for so much in return. Approximately one-third of the league has been linked to the Marlins’ catcher at some point.

If Ramos is healthy, his production at the plate could match what Realmuto does over the next couple of seasons. Realmuto made his first All-Star team last year when he hit .277/.340/.484 with a career-high 21 home runs. Ramos hit .306/.358/.487 in 111 games in 2018, and he posted a .850 OPS in 2016 before missing most of 2017 with an injury.

Ramos has dealt with several injuries throughout his career. Travis d’Arnaud will back up Ramos, though he has been injury-prone, as well. The 29-year-old played just four games last season because he was forced to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

The signing of Ramos didn’t just take the Mets out of the J.T. Realmuto Sweepstakes. It made Kevin Plawecki expendable. The catcher is available for a trade, according to Martino, after hitting .210/.315/.370 with seven home runs in 79 games last season.

New York has been among the most active teams this offseason. Before signing Ramos, they acquired Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz from the Seattle Mariners in a seven-player trade.

The Mets also signed Jeurys Familia to a three-year contract.
