  • The Miami Dolphins add Trey Flowers to shore up their pass-rushing rotation
  • Flowers is looking to bounce back after his performance waned with the Detroit Lions
  • The Dolphins are hoping that Flowers can channel his old self to boost Miami's chances next NFL season

The Miami Dolphins have added more depth to their 2022-23 NFL campaign, signing two-time Super Bowl champion Trey Flowers.

The 29-year-old worked out with the Dolphins earlier this week, and it appears that the former New England Patriots player did enough to impress head coach Mike McDaniel according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Flowers spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions.

He was one of the big investments of the Lions in 2019, agreeing to a five-year, $90 million deal.

This also allowed him to reunite with former Pats defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Unfortunately, things were not the same since leaving New England for Flowers as he struggled after a solid first season, where he registered seven sacks and two forced fumbles.

In the 2020-21 season, he missed a total of 19 games due to an injury and managed to amass only 3.5 sacks that NFL season.

He was released by the Lions this past March.

In 75 career games with 64 starts, Flowers has tallied 31.5 sacks, 37 tackles for loss, 86 QB hits, and 10 forced fumbles.

Flowers gets a fresh start with the Dolphins, likely taking on a reserve role in Miami's pass-rushing rotation.

He will play behind the likes of linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Melvin Ingram, someone who also arrived in the offseason.

Moreover, he fills in the void left by Andrew Van Ginkel, who remains uncertain for the season after getting his appendix removed.

Originally a fourth-round pick by the Patriots in 2015, Flowers' efforts rewarded him with a starting job the following year.

He became a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker on Bill Belichick's defense, logging at least 6.5 sacks in three straight seasons with New England.

But from there, things just took a different turn–particularly when he moved to Detroit.

Now with a fresh lease, the Alabama native hopes to recall that old form and figure prominently for the Dolphins this 2022-23 NFL season.

Flowers was the 81st player to be added to the roster, agreeing to a one-year deal where he will make $2.1 million with another $900,000 in incentives.
