Michael Bublé recently made his first public appearance seven months after he announced that his son, Noah, was battling cancer.

On Wednesday, June 28, Bublé accepted the National Arts Centre Award in Ottawa from the Governor General of Canada, which he was supposed to receive last year. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to do so because of some family commitments.

In his speech (via The Canadian Press), Bublé expressed his gratitude for everyone’s love and support especially during a very difficult time in his life. “I stand here truly humbled that I have been allowed to be one of your musical representatives and that you would choose to bestow this honor upon me during what has been an emotionally difficult time for my family. I thank you for the love and support that you’ve given me and for the pride I’m filled with every single time I’m able to stand on a stage and say, ‘My name is Michael Steven Bublé and I am Canadian,’” he said.

Last year, the “Mr and Mrs. Jones” singer announced that he and his wife, Luisana Lopilato, have decided to put their respective careers on hold to tend to their then 3-year-old son, Noah. On his Facebook page, Bublé also revealed that the young boy has been receiving treatment in the United States.

According to Entertainment Tonight Canada, Bublé and Lopilato initially thought that their son had mumps. After a series of checkups in the U.S., they discovered that the mumps were more serious. Bublé’s sister-in-law, Daniela Lopilato, sent a text message to Argentinian journalist Tomas Dente during a morning talk show (via The Sun) where she said, “It’s not leukemia or the central nervous system as people are saying. It’s all I can say.”

In 2015, Bublé and Lopilato’s eldest child was hospitalized after accidentally being burned with hot water in their home in Argentina. While speaking with People at that time, the “Sway” crooner said that his son was already doing well. “This was nothing major at all, thank goodness,” he said.

Bublé and Lopilato also have a 1-year-old son named Elias, who was born on Jan. 22, 2016.
