Michael Strahan is said be getting a nice salary bump by joining “Good Morning America” as a full-time correspondent. ABC announced Tuesday that the former football player would be leaving his co-hosting gig on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” to join the morning news and talk show.

According to People magazine, sources revealed that Strahan will make upwards of $20 million, which is almost double what he was getting paid for doing “Live!”

“They moved Michael because they are trying to close the gap [in ratings with NBC's ‘Today’ show] with a younger audience demographic,” a source said. “We’re talking hundreds of millions of dollars. … This was bigger than just Michael wanting to do more, because of the money involved. This would have been a company decision.”

It also looks like Strahan’s salary boost could see him making more than his “Live!” co-host Kelly Ripa. TMZ reported Thursday that Ripa, 45, makes a little less than $15 million doing the syndicated talk show. So far, ABC has not announced who will join Ripa on the show. It’s believed that auditions will take place ahead of Strahan’s fall exit.

On Thursday, Strahan, 44, addressed his departure again on “Good Morning America” saying that he was “very thankful” for Ripa. The pair has co-hosted the show together since 2012, when he took over for Regis Philbin.

“I’ve learned so much from her and [producer] Michael Gelman,” he said. “[They] showed me the ropes. I was so new to all of this, and if it weren’t for her and if it weren’t for Michael Gelman and the staff there that really boosted me up and made me look a lot better than I really am.”

Ripa is said to be “livid” over Strahan’s exit because she found out at the last minute. She has not commented on the “Live!” shakeup and has not been on the show since the news broke.
