"Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer has a cryptic countdown on her website, and fans believe it could be for her highly awaited novel “Midnight Sun.”

Posted on the novelist’s website homepage is a star-studded clock ticking its way to May 4. Fans have speculated that Meyer’s mysterious countdown could be in anticipation of a release or an announcement about a “Twilight” series spinoff or a sequel to her other novel, “The Host.” Though there hasn’t been an official statement from the author just yet, avid fans are currently on the lookout and cooking up theories for a possible book release.

Some of Meyer’s fans believe that the countdown might be for the anticipated “Midnight Sun,” the author’s follow-up to her much touted “Twilight” series. In comparison to the “Twilight” novels, which were told from the perspective of Bella Swan, the series sequel is supposedly narrated from Edward Cullen’s point of view, the vampire played by Robert Pattinson in the novel’s film adaptations.

A draft excerpt from the unfinished novel leaked in 2008, as per The Guardian, but the novel had not progressed since then. Now, fans are led to believe that the novelist will be releasing her fifth “Twilight” book next Monday.

Incidentally, Fickle Fish Films, the 46-year-old author’s production company, also gave out clues on some big news that is probably linked to the website countdown. In an Instagram post, the company posted a photo of the night sky with the caption: “stepheniemeyer.com”

A fan’s post on Twitter also seemed to support the interesting theory, stating that the original source code of the website led to a link of the author’s Twilight series spinoff “stepheniemeyermidnightsun.com.” Another user’s post corroborated the tweet, saying that the speculation is indeed true and that the link was recently changed. The user also attached a screenshot of the link alongside the post.

It has been 15 years since Meyer’s “Twilight” saga made its debut. Numerous fans have notably been attuned with its iconic characters Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Though the quadrilogy garnered lukewarm reviews, with some critics tapping the novel as lacking in character development, the 2005 young adult vampire romance novel still gained success, ranking fifth on The New York Times bestseller list. The novel was then adapted into a film that was released in 2008 and also became a striking commercial success.
