Mike Richards was fired Tuesday as executive producer of the "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" game shows.

Richards initially stepped down as "Jeopardy!" host to serve as executive producer after a report revealed past misogynistic comments he made on a podcast. For many fans, this was not enough and Richards received trending backlash on Twitter, leading a Sony executive to formally announce he would be no longer serve as executive producer.

"We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at 'Jeopardy!' it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. That clearly has not happened," said Sony Pictures Television executive Suzanne Prete.

Sony has faced criticism for choosing Richards after his past comments surfaced in recent days. Many expressed their concerns on Twitter and have pushed for actor LeVar Burton to serve as the permanent host.

“Do I think Mike Richards’s podcast comments were appropriate for polite society? No. But did he deserve the benefit of the doubt for the job he did running Jeopardy? Also no,” James Holzhauer, a former 'Jeopardy!' champion, posted on Twitter.

Sony announced that Richards will be leaving the program just three weeks after he was announced the game show’s new host, replacing Alex Trebek.

The New York Times reported that Sony executives had called him a “unique talent” and requested for him to stay as the show’s executive producer even after he stepped down as host. However, this move generated scrunity and executives found that keeping Richards on the show would be unsustainable.

Fans celebrated the news on Twitter.

“Mike Richards is so funny to me. No one knew who he was and he just popped up out of nowhere to be like I'M A STRANGER THAT SUCKS! and now that's the thing he's famous for,” screenwriter Broti Gupta said in a Tweet.

Prete noted in her email that she will work with Michael Davies, CEO of Sony-owned television production company Embassy Row, to “ensure that production remains on schedule and we do not miss a beat as we head into the new season.”

"I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks,” the email read.

The new season of “Jeopardy!” will air in September.
