The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office found nearly 600 Amazon packages dumped northeast of Oklahoma City on New Year's Eve, launching an investigation into the incident.

“The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office is investigating after almost 600 Amazon packages were found dumped . . . New Year’s Eve. Someone had removed the items they wanted and discarded the rest,” a Facebook post from the Oklahoma County Sherriff’s Office reads.

While some packages were opened, the thief left behind books, prompting a joke from the office’s post.

“(Apparently the thief isn't much of a reader...the books that were being delivered were left behind),” the post read.

Images from the Facebook post show packages, crumpled and destroyed, some ripped or broken, in a room at the Sherriff’s office called the “Crime Lab, Investigations Division.” The post also shows people diligently going through the items to recover and try to return the items that were lost.

The packages in question were scheduled to arrive at people's homes by Christmas but never made it to their destination. However, tracking information shows that the packages left an Amazon facility and went to USPS for delivery but then never arrived.

The Sherriff’s office is in contact with Amazon and USPS and wants anyone with information or those affected by the theft to call Amazon or USPS directly, not the Sherriff’s office in charge of the investigation.

Amazon and USPS have yet to release a statement on the incident.
