A California man is in police custody Monday for his alleged involvement in the two-day disappearance of a teenage girl.

The man, 22, was arrested Sunday by a team of officers from the San Francisco Police Department and campus police from the University of California San Francisco. His arrest followed a two-day search for a Mendocino County girl, 13, reported missing on Friday.

The teen was reported safe.

Police were notified the girl had disappeared around 3:30 p.m. on Friday near the University of California San Francisco. She was reportedly in the area because a family member was receiving treatment for type 1 diabetes at the UCSF Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes. Her photo was quickly shared online by family, police, and local news outlets as search efforts intensified over the weekend.

Cold Case Mendocino, a group describing itself as “citizen investigators,” said the girl had reportedly been seen around San Francisco on Saturday after meeting up with an unidentified man.

She was found accompanied by the man Sunday at the San Francisco Ferry Building. Police said she was found safely, reportedly unharmed, and has since been returned to her family.

“We will provide additional information as soon as we are able to do so,” University of California San Francisco spokesperson Lorna Fernandes said in a statement.

The investigation is considered ongoing and authorities have withheld the names because the case involves a minor.
