National Sweetest Day, which is usually celebrated on the third Saturday in October, falls on Oct. 17 this year. It is celebrated to express love and care to the ones closest to you.

Originally named "Sweetest Day of the Year," the day was created by confectioner Herbert Birch Kingston in 1921 with an intention to look after those who need extra attention by giving them small tokens of love such as cards and gifts.
