The Boston Celtics agreed to a four-year $115 million contract extension with forward Jaylen Brown on Monday.

The decision, which was taken only hours before the deadline, has shown how much Celtics value Brown because it is for the first time in a decade that the team has offered a contract extension to a rookie.

If the deal was not made, Brown would have become a restricted free agent next offseason. However, Celtics now have secured him until 2024. The deal came out as a surprise for many since the rumors, heading into the day, indicated that both the parties were not on board regarding it.

Celtics admitted in a press release that Brown is a major part of their championship goals and they were impressed the way he accepted his role the previous season.

Making it clear how much they value Brown, Celtics team president Danny Ainge said, "Jaylen has made tremendous strides over the last three years and has become a fantastic player for us on both ends of the court. He's a great person and hard worker who, at 22 years old, can score and defend against the best players in the NBA. Jaylen is a true professional who did a great job accepting his role last season, and he is a major part of our championship goals."

A Yahoo Sports journalist revealed more contract details on Twitter. "He can secure $8M in incentives if he wins MVP, DPOY or makes one of three All-NBA Teams. He pockets $4M if plays 65 or more games, the team wins 49 or more games and reaches the second round of playoffs. Total guaranteed salary $103M," he tweeted.

The 22-year-old Brown was overall the No. 3 pick in the 2016 draft. Last season, the forward averaged 13.0 points and 4.2 rebounds on 46.5 percent shooting and thereby disappointed everyone who expected him to have a huge year after his breakout during the 2018 playoffs.

Although Brown remains a developing player in a team that is aiming to win the title, Celtics have full faith in the youngster.

"He definitely has a lot on him. We know, and this coaching staff knows his ability. And [Brown is] athletic enough to guard a lot of guys. So once he understands that and he takes that head-on, he'll be a better all-around player. And he's been doing a pretty good job so far," Celtics guard Marcus Smart earlier said.
