  • Georgia Bulldogs guard Anthony Edwards officially declared for the NBA Draft
  • Edwards is expected to be the top pick for the upcoming draft
  • Golden State Warriors will need Edwards if they are in a win-now mode

Anthony Edwards declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft brings the Golden State Warriors one step closer to bringing him to the Bay Area.

The shooting guard out of the University of Georgia shared on his social media his decision of declaring for the upcoming draft where he is one of the players that are in the conversation of being the number one pick. Listed at 6-foot-5, Edwards was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year.

“Georgia will always be my home but I am ready to take my game to the next level and have decided to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft,” the 18-year old said in his statement. “I hope I’ve made you all proud but the work is far from finished.”

In what proved to be his only year with the Bulldogs, he averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals in 32 games for coach Tom Crean. Edwards, though, was a marked man in their last game as he struggled heavily on their last game against Ole Miss Rebels. He only had six points, missing all but two of his 13 attempts, four assists, and two rebounds in 40 minutes but Georgia still managed to beat the Rebels, 81-63.

Per NBC Sports, Edwards is the best player that the Warriors could think of who can extend the dynasty that the team has built once their stars are past their prime. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green are in their early 30s and bringing in Edwards, a teenager, will have the chance to be mentored by the core of the team’s three championships in the last decade.

The Warriors acquired Andrew Wiggins from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for D’Angelo Russell and Edwards is the player the Warriors would need if they are on a win-now situation once their injured stars return next season.
