KEY POINTS

  • J.R. Smith remains hopeful of continuing his NBA career
  • Smith remains a vital player for any team in need of three-point shooting and defense
  • Smith may have to wait in the same way Carmelo Anthony did before joining the Blazers

J.R. Smith remains one of the high-profile names in NBA free agency but no team has come forward to take a chance on the controversial swingman. In what critics figure is an effort to gain some attention, the 34-year-old player posted a curious tweet on Christmas Eve.

"How many teams lack shooting an perimeter defense?" Smith posted on his Twitter account.

Not long after, he would make a follow-up post claiming that the social media post was meant for a friend. Pundits feel he was just trying to be playful although not all are buying it.

Curiously, Smith could be of help to several teams in need of a shooter and defensive player. There are teams like the Chicago Bulls or the Golden State Warriors who could use someone like the 18th overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft. In fact, it was mentioned in a previous post how Smith could have joined the Dubs before the celebrated Andre Iguodala trade.

In another previous post, one team would use Smith would be the Brooklyn Nets. Irving is not expected until 2020 while players like David Nwaba and Caris LeVert remain in sickbay. However, the 6-foot-6 guard will have to console himself with a meager salary. The Nets were granted disable player exception where they get an additional $839,000 to spare.

The Chicago Bulls are another team that could use Smith. Otto Porter Jr. and Chandler Hutchinson are nursing injuries and head coach Jim Boylen is trying to make do with his available personnel. However, there is the question of whether Smith can co-exist with the Bulls current head coach. He has had issues in the past and the same is expected to remain.

Smith will likely want to join an NBA team that intends to go deep in the playoffs. The Los Angeles Lakers would make sense. However, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN mentioned back in July that the purple and gold are an unlikely destination despite Smith having ties with LeBron James.

The worst-case scenario is for Smith to retire. However, it appears that it is farthest in his mind. The best he can do is play the waiting game - the same course that Carmelo Anthony did before eventually hooking up with the Portland Trail Blazers.
