KEY POINTS

  • Harrell is proving to be his worth after being recruited by the Lakers last offseason
  • Harrell is fitting in nicely, contributing overlooked things that the Lakers currently need
  • Harrell could be due for a bigger raise after this season

Considering he proved himself one of the reliable all-around players last NBA season, there was no question that Montrezl Harrell would be a prized addition.

Most teams probably got blindsided by the Los Angeles Lakers who beat everyone to the services of the 2020 NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

From the way he was helping the Los Angeles Clippers, there was no question that Harrell deserved something better. With more minutes, he would have been a star for any NBA team who took a chance on him.

When he opted to join the Lakers, questions were in the air. How could this 6-foot-7 forward blend in with a team that already has top stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis?

Regardless, the 32nd pick of the 2015 NBA Draft demonstrated he was flexible and could fit into any NBA team’s system. This season alone, Harrell has played in 47 games, averaging 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists.

Those are improved numbers compared to last season, all done in a souped-up squad in the Lakers.

Of course, his improved numbers were aided a bit by the fact that Anthony Davis and LeBron James have been held out due to injuries.

Hence, his coming may be a blessing in disguise, helping head coach Frank Vogel and the Lakers stay in the mix as they buy time for their two stars.

Furthermore, it would be worth noting that the Lakers of the past or any other NBA team will always need that workhorse player. Names like Horace Grant, Kurt Rambis and AC Green come to mind.

These were bangers who played behind the stars but were rewarded with NBA titles. If the Lakers win it all again this NBA season, Harrell could get an NBA ring.

Harrell signed a two-year deal with the Lakers worth roughly $19 million. He does have a player option after this season and may opt-out.

However, opting out does not mean he is lost for the Purple and Gold. Instead, he could get a new and heftier contract. So far, he has proven worthy of one, but the climax would be helping the Lakers win their 18th NBA title.
