  • Lakers may consider trading Rajon Rondo to the Celtics
  • Rondo played his prime years in Boston
  • Rondo will be an upgrade in Boston's back-up point guard spot

Rajon Rondo might be traded away again, but a report projects he might suit up in a green jersey, which has a nice ring to it. The Los Angeles Lakers may not rule out the possibility of setting up a homecoming for the veteran point guard as a potential trade with the Boston Celtics could be in the works.

Rondo’s first two years in L.A. has not been quite up to stuff for the die-hard Lakers fans. Some have cut him some slack given that his diminished play comes with his age. That reason alone, however, will not guarantee the four-time All-Star’s place in the team moving forward, leading to a growing belief that a reunion with the Celtics would be the most ideal scenario for his career.

“Rajon Rondo will forever be remembered as a Boston Celtic for being a part of the 2008 championship team and playing out his prime in Boston,” wrote Jason Reed of Fansided’s Lake Show Life. “While he has bounced around the league since leaving Boston, maybe it is time to go back home for Rondo.”

The former Kentucky Wildcat spent eight years with the Celtics, who traded for him in 2006 after he was selected 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in the rookie draft. He seized the team’s starting point a season later and would go on to ride a sudden surge in his young career, highlighted by the 2008 championship run with a star-studded group led by Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett.

As Reed assessed the respective line-ups based on paper, he implied a trade deal between the Lakers and the Celtics involving Rondo could be sensible in a lot of ways.

“This is not a deal that the Celtics would make out of nostalgia, however, as the team has a legitimate need at the backup point guard position,” Reed continued. “It would be a nice style fit as well as he could come off the bench behind Kemba Walker and form a nice defensive backcourt alongside Marcus Smart.”

The Lakers could get the “flexibility” of looking for Rondo’s replacement as the Celtics, per Reed, could offer their second-round pick from Brooklyn in return.
