KEY POINTS

  • Chris Paul has been having a good season with the Thunder
  • A Chris Paul trade may no longer be feasible
  • CP3 could end his career as a Thunder

Chris Paul is someone who most see as a player entering the twilight of his NBA career. Already 35, there is no question that trading him at this point makes no sense. His $159.7 million contract is seen as a huge obstacle but it appears the 9-time All-Star was given that pact for a reason.

CP3 was one of the big surprises last summer when the Houston Rockets traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Russell Westbrook. One reason behind that was his alleged soured relationship with James Harden. Initially most felt that it would be the fourth overall pick of the 2005 NBA Draft's temporary stop. The Miami Heat were reportedly interested in him but were wary of his hefty deal. A lot of that was discussed in a previous post.

With the NBA trade deadline fast approaching, it appears all the trade chatter involving Paul has died down. The Heat have quietly been drawn out of NBA trade talks while no other team has truly expressed interest in acquiring the services of the 6-foot-1 guard. But as mentioned earlier, that move to OKC may have been destiny for CP3.

Looking at his averages this season, Paul has been putting up decent numbers. According to Basketball-Reference.com, he has played in 41 games averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists. Beyond what Paul has to offer, the Thunder have found a way to stay in the magic 8 of the NBA Western Conference. They currently tote a 23-18 win-loss record and occupy 7th place.

Rather than slow down, it appears Paul has found renewed energy in leading the Thunder. He functions well off the ball, allowing other players like Dennis Schroder to dominate on each ball possession, Yardbarker.com pointed out. When needed, he does not shy away from the clutch. In short, Paul is ready to answer the call when his team needs him to make the big plays.

For as long as the Thunder are winning, it appears Paul is here to stay. He does have two years left in his current deal where he will make about $85 million. Once that runs out, CP3 will be about 36 to 37 years old. He could still be around but more as a mentor or an assistant coach at the time. For now, Paul is enjoying the ride with the OKC Thunder.
