KEY POINTS

  • Motiejunas drawing interest from NBA teams
  • Motiejunas still under contract with Shanghai Sharks
  • Euro Teams also targeting Motiejunas

Donatas Motiejunas is one of multiple former NBA stars who have opted to leave China temporarily due to the coronavirus. Currently under contract with the Shanghai Sharks, the 29-year-old cager reportedly drew interest from at least two NBA teams - the Phoenix Suns and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

For those who are following the plight of the two teams, both are out of the NBA playoffs. They are going through the motions of finishing the current season and taking in Motiejunas could be senseless. But then again, it could be a way for either team to see if the Lithuanian could fit in with them by next season. The stint could be temporary, meaning there is no assurance that Motiejunas would be given a guaranteed and long-term contract.

According to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando, Motiejunas is scheduled to return to China on Mar. 16. Apparently, the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) anticipates the league to resume by April. Considering Motiejunas is under contract with the Sharks, the interest of the Suns and T-Wolves may not be feasible. Motiejunas wants the security of tenure as well, meaning it may be in his best interest to stick with his CBA team.

The story would be different if the Suns or the T-Wolves are willing to buy out Motiejunas' contract with the Shanghai Sharks. And if they are determined to get the 20th overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, they need to act fast. Apparently, the 7-footer has also drawn interest from Maccabi Tel Aviv according to journalist to Donatas Urbonas.

The last time Motiejunas played in the NBA was last year. He signed with the San Antonio Spurs and played just three games. Rather than sign a new deal with the Spurs, Motiejunas chose to sign with the Sharks who offer a more valuable deal. He holds career averages of 7.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. His best year was during the 2014-15 NBA season when he was still with the Houston Rockets.

In the CBA, Motiejunas has been a force for the Sharks. He is averaging 22.8 points and 15.1 rebounds in 28 games. But most know that those numbers pale once the jump to the NBA is made. Looking ahead, it may be best for Motiejunas to finish his current CBA season and then entertain pitches from NBA teams after. In the end, the Lithuanian is expected to choose the best financial package for security reasons.
