KEY POINTS

  • Thaddeus Young is allegedly not for trade, but a good offer could change the Bulls' mind
  • Young is a proven worker, someone who could add veteran leadership to any playoff-bound team
  • The Bulls may not prioritize trade deals for Young as they push for a playoff seat

The Chicago Bulls have the NBA postseason in sight although head coach Billy Donovan could tweak the roster before the March 25 trade deadline.

Zach LaVine has been mentioned in the trade rumor mill, but pundits don’t see a deal happening unless it involves a big name.

Hence, an NBA trade deadline deal could be happening on something else. One player who has been frequently mentioned is 14-year veteran Thaddeus Young.

Though he has been overlooked at times, the 32-year-old power forward silently goes to work once he is asked to contribute. However, his output has dipped significantly.

Right now, Young is averaging 12.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 24.9 minutes of action. He can score when needed and contribute the little things to help any NBA team win.

Although he is only in the second year of a three-year deal, there is a chance that he could be dealt for the right assets by the Bulls. He is making $13.45 million this season and $14.1 million for the 2021-22 wars.

But for some teams, Young could be of help as early as now. Here are three potential scenarios for the 6-foot-8 cager heading towards the trade deadline even if reports have it that he is not on the block.

Philadelphia 76ers

Young started his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2007 averaging 14.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

He was the blue-collar worker that the Sixers had at that time, so a reunion could make sense. But to add him, Philly would have to give up certain players in the mix.

Among the names mentioned include Mike Scott, Terrance Ferguson, Tony Bradley and possibly a future pick.

Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are believed to be a player away from solidifying their roster. Young carries the veteran experience to help toughen up the frontline and boost the Cs chances in the NBA playoffs.

But in exchange, Boston may have to give up some players like Danie Theiss, Romeo Langford and some future picks.

Brad Stevens could use someone like him off the bench, a move that could give the Celtics a role player who can also score if needed.

Dallas Mavericks

Lastly, there are the Dallas Mavericks who could get a boost with Thaddeus Young. Though Rick Carlisle has a bunch of scoring threats to aid Luka Doncic or Kristaps Porzingis, adding a tested veteran to hoist shots when needed would be welcome.

But to land the NBA journeyman, some may have to get. Among the names that could be exciting include Dwight Powell, Wes Iwundu and Josh Green.

Adding some picks could sweeten the deal and help provide the needed push of the Mavs in the playoffs.
