The Cleveland Cavaliers are going through the motions of finishing the current NBA season with plenty of personnel changes ahead. This would include the fate of Cavs coach Larry Drew, who said that his future will depend only after the current season.

There is no certainty if he will stay on and get another chance to rebuild the distraught Cavs. Since the loss of star players LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, it has been a struggle for Cleveland thus far. The current season alone is a testament to their struggles. They have one game remaining and the best finish they can get is at 20-62 over in the NBA Eastern Conference.

If the record is to be a basis, that may hardly convince Cavs management of keeping the 61-year-old mentor. But then again, there are several factors to consider. One is that Drew never really had the luxury of suiting up a legit NBA star and that key personnel such as Kevin Love were bitten by the injury bug, Amico Hoops reported.

Drew filled in for Tyronn Lue last season when the latter was hit by illness. He coached the Cavs to a 9-1 record but was unable to prove that he could do better this season, albeit the impending 20-62 win-loss mark.

The Cavs do have some bright spots although those may not entirely be credited to Drew. That includes Collin Sexton who has shown he does have the potential to be among the league’s top stars. But of course, he needs to be surrounded by proper personnel for the Cavaliers bandwagon to perform well.

Love, out for the majority of the 2018-19 NBA season, is back but the Cavs need more. After the exit of Irving and James, he was seen as the new pillar for the team. Sadly, that has not reaped dividends, with the 30-year-old struggling to stay healthy. Could it be a different story next season?

There are obviously a lot of loose ends for the Cavs. Adding key (but sensible) personnel is at the top of the list. Cleveland has not been mentioned among the teams in the hunt for big names like Kevin Durant or Kawhi Leonard. Jimmy Butler has been mentioned but the swingman is likely to opt to join teams with better chances at least making the NBA playoffs.

Before any movement can be done, the Cavs need to figure out if Drew is worth keeping. If not, a new head coach may tweak the lineup instead.
