KEY POINTS

  • Kevin Love and Tristam Thompson likely moving out soon
  • Kevin Love will be an expensive catch for other NBA teams
  • Thompson move could be short-term

Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson are two big men multiple NBA teams could surely use. However, each carries different cases and scenarios. The Cleveland Cavaliers have not revealed anything but the majority believe that both are headed out the door.

In the case of Love, it is his contract that makes him hard to move. He owns a four-year $120 million deal, meaning the only way to deal him off is via large haul. Several teams have been linked to the 31-year-old forward like the Portland Trail Blazers and the Miami Heat. As of this writing, nothing has gone down.

The case of Thompson is a bit different. The 28-year-old is in the final year of his deal with the Cavs and will become an unrestricted free agent. Unlike Love, he is likely to end up as a rental and test free agency in the summer. Thompson is due $18.5 million this NBA season and likely to seek a bigger in the offseason.

According to a previous report, the Cavs reportedly want to keep the Canadian on the roster. The reason is that the organization has grown fond of him. Also, he does still fit in the age requirement of the Cavs' youth movement. However, it remains to be seen if head coach John Beilein sees him fit the system he is employing.

Conversely, Love had had a rough time in the past months. As mentioned in another report, most know how he went off on Collin Sexton and that brush with general manager Koby Altman. His huge salary is seen as the biggest obstacle and other teams are likely to be wary as well.

However, new claims have cropped up as of late. According to Cleveland.com, some Cavs players feel that both will be traded soon. With the Cavs toting a 13-37 win-loss record, rebuilding as they move forward is seen as the logical way to go.

The Cavs will likely want young but promising players in exchange. Future picks will be considered for as long as this can help in their rebuilding efforts. Without question, it makes sense for the Cavs to clean the house by dealing out their veterans. Aside from the two, only Matthew Dellavedova are remnants of their 2016 NBA champion squad.
