In a horrific incident, the mutilated body of a newborn baby was found near an abandoned building in India on Sunday. Authorities said the child, believed to be not more than two days old, was probably left there by the mother.

Local residents noticed stray animals preying on "some food" in the bushes near the dilapidated building. They went closer and found blood all over the place, local daily the Times of India reported. They immediately alerted the police. This happened in the southern Indian city of Chennai.

A police officer told the Times of India that they found only the torso of the baby. The area was ideal for dumping anything unwanted, the officer said, adding that some animals might have killed and eaten parts of the body after the child was abandoned at the site.

Police said the abandoned building was located on a hillside frequented by wild dogs and jackals.

Authorities are collecting details of women who had given birth in nearby government hospitals and had left the facilities without following proper procedure. The remains of the child have been sent for an autopsy. The search for the mother of the baby is ongoing.

In a recent incident, a newborn baby, who was delivered in an open place, was mauled to death by stray dogs in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The incident came to light after a local resident saw a dog roaming the streets with the body of an infant in its mouth. When the resident raised an alarm, the canine left the body on the road and fled.

Police arrived at the spot and took the body to a government hospital. They spotted blood-stained clothes in the area where the body was found.
