In a shocking incident in Arkansas, a newborn baby was killed by the family's dog.

The dog, said to be a husky, reportedly put its mouth on the baby's head, due to which the canine's tooth penetrated the child's head, media outlet KHBS reported.

Cave Springs Police Lt. Keith Lawson said the incident took place on Dec. 14 in the afternoon. The child was rushed to Children's Hospital in Springdale after being hurt, and then flown to Children's Hospital in Little Rock. However, the doctors declared the child died due to her injuries.

The Cave Springs police have launched an investigation into the incident after they learned about the baby's death.

"On Wednesday, Dec. 14, my office was notified by the Cave Springs Police Department that they were investigating the death of a 4-day-old baby girl. Based on the statements of witnesses and the opinions of medical professionals, it was determined that the fatal injuries were inflicted on the child by the family dog," Nathan Smith, Benton County prosecuting attorney, said, according to KTSM.

The dog was euthanized following the child's death. It remains unclear if the dog was attacking the newborn baby. It is also not known who was with the child at the time of the incident.

The details about the baby's family were not revealed by the authorities.

In July, a 70-year-old woman died after being attacked by a dog in New York. The woman – identified as Marina Verriest – was found dead by her husband. According to reports at the time, the husband found the animal dragging her mutilated body through the backyard of their Albertson home. The pit bull was aged seven, the police said. "The scene was pretty horrific. We don't know what time the attack took place, but there was obviously a lot of mutilation on the body and the arm, the face [and] the legs," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder revealed at the time. The officer who responded to the scene opened fire, killing the animal. The dog that attacked the woman belonged to her stepson, who died in a motorcycle accident a few weeks before the incident. "We don't know what turned the dog or why the dog turned on the woman. There had been no previous domestic calls to the home or calls regarding the dog," Ryder said at the time.
