KEY POINTS

  • Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may have a particular target in the 2022 NFL Draft
  • The Cowboys rarely trade up in the NFL Draft to get a better selection
  • Jones may find it difficult to get an ideal position in the 2022 NFL Draft

The Dallas Cowboys' position in the 2022 NFL Draft is far from comforting with the team at the No. 24 spot.

Moving up the NFL Draft ladder is a possibility, something that Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones said they may consider.

“Just going in as much as you could say about it until you see what’s there or who’s on the other line, but I would trade up since we’re down as low as we are in those first two, three rounds if we had a chance to and someone we really coveted was sitting at the bottom, and we were able to trade up there and get them,” Jones told The Athletic reporter Jon Machota.

The last time they traded up in an NFL Draft was in 2012. This was the time when took on LSU cornerback Morris Clairborne with the sixth overall pick.

At the time, Jones stressed that Clairborne was the only player they were willing to trade up for--per a report from the Huffington Post.

Unfortunately, Clairborne never lived up to expectations. He never played more than 11 games in a season for Dallas except for his rookie year.

Injuries took their toll on the Super Bowl LIV champion. He ended up moving to the New York Jets in 2017 and again in 2019 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The comments may mean something or nothing. But it is clear that if the Cowboys owner pushes for a trade, he has a certain player in mind.

However, there is a chance that he could go after a wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft, Dead Spin reported.

Hence, some potential targets that the Cowboys may have in mind include Jermaine Johnson or George Karlaftis.

But this will depend on how high Jones is aiming.

If it is inside the top seven picks, there are several players to consider. That list includes Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan), Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oregon), and Travon Walker (Georgia)–all of whom are expected to be gone early.

From Mo. 24, pundits feel it would be hard for Jones to pull it off, assuming he is serious about trading up to a higher spot in the 2022 NFL Draft.
