KEY POINTS

  • Bears are favorites to land Teddy Bridgwater
  • Phillip Rivers is an option for Chargers
  • Mitchell Trubisky needs to play better to keep role with Chargers

After gaining ground in the 2018-19 NFL season, critics felt the Chicago Bears would do better in 2019-20. Unfortunately, that did not happen and the Bears underwhelmed. A player singled out was Mitchell Trubisky.

General manager Ryan Pace had high hopes for Trubisky, the second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. But it appears the 25-year-old needs some boost to work harder for the next NFL season. Chicago is expected to skim the free-agent market for available quarterbacks and several names have cropped up.

According to NBC Sports, three targets are over in New Orleans. These are Drew Brees, Taysom Hill, and Teddy Bridgewater. Of the three, Bridgewater looms as a plausible choice to give Trubisky some semblance of competition.

The Bears are the odds-on-favorites and getting Bridgewater would make plenty of sense. He is only 27 and still has some competitive years left in him. With the Saints, Bridgewater started in five games and nearly completed 68-percent of his passes. He also threw for 1,384 yards, nine touchdowns, and just two interceptions.

As far as being an elite player, pundits see the 32nd pick of the 2014 NFL Draft far from it. However, that is not seen as the reason why Chicago would have vested interested in Bridgewater. The Bears could thrive with a veteran who is consistent and reliable enough to help out the defensive end. He could also contribute on offense, delivering the points when needed. These are points where Trubisky failed miserably but getting Bridgewater could help address that.

The only problem seen with Bridgewater is that he may want a starting role. Depending on how things go in camp, it all boils down to who head coach Matt Nagy deems fit. Trubisky is likely aware of these scenarios, meaning he will have to earn his keep to keep his starting job.

One person who believes Trubisky will bounce back is former high school coach Steve Trivisonno. He is pretty confident that the one-time Pro Bowler will turn things around and the Bears should be in better shape in the 2020-21 NFL season, the Sun-Times reported.

“It’s very important to him,” Trivisonno said. “He’s very focused and locked in, and he’ll represent the Bears real well next year. He’ll be fine.”

If not Bridgewater, the Bears could explore possibilities with Phillip Rivers. The 38-year-old had a better showing compared to Trubisky although his age could hint at a short-term tenure.
