With no marquee quarterbacks headed for free agency, a backup could reap the benefits this offseason. According to the latest rumors, Mitch Trubisky is expected to land a lucrative contract and a chance to be a starter for the 2022 NFL season.

Reports from the NFL Scouting Combine suggest that a quarterback-needy team will pay Trubisky a starter’s salary in free agency. Trubisky was Josh Allen’s backup with the Buffalo Bills for the 2021 season, attempting just eight total passes.

The Chicago Bears selected Trubisky with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. In 51 games over four seasons with Chicago, Trubisky posted an 87.2 passer rating, 10,609 passing yards, 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

Trubisky’s best statistical season came in 2018. He set career highs with 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The Bears’ offense struggled with Trubisky at the helm, but the unit didn’t get any better following his departure last offseason. Chicago fired head coach Matt Nagy after a 6-11 season.

NFL Network’s Rich Eisen noted that the Carolina Panthers or Washington Commanders could be contenders to sign Trubisky. Both teams are reportedly interested in trading for a star quarterback, but they could have a difficult time completing a deal.

Deshaun Watson is expected to be traded this offseason, but his status remains unclear due to legal issues. It seems unlikely that the Seattle Seahawks will trade Russell Wilson. Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery could impact his trade market this offseason.

Aaron Rodgers has yet to make a decision about his future with the Green Bay Packers.

Trubisky signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Bills last year.
