KEY POINTS

  • The Los Angeles Rams could be adding another big name in Stephon Gilmore
  • The San Francisco 49ers want Gilmore at a much lower price
  • Gilmore could be another key piece for the Rams to win another Super Bowl

The Los Angeles Rams employed an unusual “picks-for-players” approach to win Super Bowl LVI earlier this year, and it appears they are sticking to it.

Their plans this offseason hint at doing the same. Proof of that is the signing of linebacker Bobby Wagner who agreed to a $50 million, five-year deal.

The deal could go as high as $65 million if the 31-year-old NFL player reaches incentives.

But aside from Wagner, it seems the Rams have their eyes on another player.

The Rams have reportedly been in touch with cornerback Stephon Gilmore per a report from Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.

If both sides can come to an agreement, the one-time Super Bowl champion could start outside opposite Jalen Ramsey.

Last season, the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year suited up for the Carolina Panthers after being dealt by the New England Patriots following a contract dispute.

He played in only eight games due to a dislocated finger and groin strain, but the native of South Carolina still amassed 16 tackles, two interceptions, and two pass breakups.

Gilmore has a long list of accolades to his credit. Aside from being a Super Bowl Champion (LIII) and a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year award-winner, he has made it to the All-Pro First Team twice (2018, 2019) and has appeared in five Pro Bowls (2016, 2018-2021).

Considered to be one of the top free-agent names this season, the Rams may encounter rough competition from other NFL teams.

Other NFL teams who have been linked to the five-time Pro Bowler include the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reported.

Although the 49ers are said to be in the lead with the Jets, the team wants him at a lower average annual value than J.C. Jackson ($16.5 million) and Carlton Davis ($15 million) received from the Los Angeles Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers respectively.
