KEY POINTS

  • Baltimore Ravens Greg Roman will be interviewed by several NFL teams
  • Roman could be next NFL season's newest head coach
  • The Washington Redskins or the Carolina Panthers could be Roman's next stop

The Baltimore Ravens are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now, and offensive coordinator Greg Roman is getting a lot of credit. His work with Lamar Jackson has been singled out and it may only be a matter of time before he gets the chance to be a head coach.

The Ravens are 12-2 entering Week 16 and clinched a first-round bye. And while Baltimore players are expected to use the bye week to rest, it looks like Roman will not get that much. According to CBS Sports, multiple teams will be interviewing the 47-year-old in what could turn out to be a big jump to a head coaching job.

Regardless of what happens ahead for the Ravens, the interest in Roman calls to mind the story of Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers. Back during the 2016-17 NFL season, Shanahan was serving as the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator. After losing to the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LI, the 40-year-old caught a break and snagged his first head coaching job with the 49ers. It was only this year where the 49ers investment in Shanahan has come into full circle.

Ironically, Roman also served as an offensive coordinator to the 49ers back in 2012. He was under Jim Harbaugh at the time and re-designed the offense using Colin Kaepernick at the time, NBC Sports reported. Now, Roman has done that again but with Jackson. The Ravens were able to unleash the 22-year-old's full potential and reaping the fruits from that success.

The teams interested in Roman were not revealed. However, there are teams currently handled by interim head coaches. That includes the Carolina Panthers (David Tepper) and the Washington Redskins (Bill Callahan). They could be some of the teams interviewing Roman although it remains to be seen if he will accept any offer.

Whether he stays or goes, Roman is expected to stay the course and help the Ravens get as deep as possible. Baltimore defeated the Cleveland Browns, 31-15, clinching the top seed in the AFC and securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, TSN reported.
