NFL Teams Have Not Given Up On Signing Kliff Kingsbury

Last month, several NFL teams were hot on the trail of Kliff Kingsbury after he was fired by Texas Tech in the college ranks. And while getting dismissed seems to render a negative light, that was not the case for the 39-year-old native of San Antonio, Texas.
As mentioned in a previous report, Kingsbury got offers from two NFL teams. Though it was mentioned that he would be the offensive coordinator of the said teams, details of what was actually offered were never revealed.
Apparently, nothing came out of those talks, with Kingsbury ending up with USC. He was signed last Dec. 5. Kingsbury's case is a curious one. Before Texas Tech, he was the offensive coordinator for Texas A&M the season prior. Kingsbury went 35-40 in six years as the team’s head coach, recording just two winning seasons.
But it seems that there are at least two reasons why Kingsbury has become a prime target of NFL teams. One is that a lot of offensive coordinator openings are expected in 2019. Several teams have parted with their current ones, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, and the New York Jets.
The second reason why some teams are eager to hook Kingsbury is that the number of teams adopting schemes from colleges has been growing. Paired with his ability to develop quarterbacks, his style makes him the perfect choice to bring his act to the pros. One quarterback that comes to mind is Patrick Mahomes, who he mentored from 2014 to 2016, Bleacher Report noted.
While everything seems quiet on his end as of this writing, reports of him possibly getting poached by an NFL team soon have once again placed the 39-year-old in the spotlight. Jay Glaze of Fox revealed how several NFL teams are now looking at his contract, checking to see if they can possibly lure him out before he actually gets started in Los Angeles.

While most are looking at Kingsbury being taken in as an offensive coordinator, Jeff Darlington suggested that he is actually being considered for a head coaching gig. Hence, it could be a big leap from where Kingsbury is right now, a job offered only to a select few.
Source says USC would like an answer from Kliff Kingsbury by midweek. Kliff's holdup isn’t merely interest from NFL teams to join staff — but also NFL teams with interest in him as HEAD coaching possibility. Given the timeline… He’ll have to decide the worth of a bird in hand.

Kingsbury, a former NFL player, should know why the growing interest in him could be a rare chance of a lifetime. While he could opt to sharpen his craft with USC before moving on to the pros, the opportunity may grow stale or pass. Regardless, the final decision rests on his hands.
